So I've always enjoyed Halloween. Gotta love an excuse to dress up as whatever you want and get candy in return! Growing up my parents would not let me take part in anything "haunted" and made me stay clear of things like witches, ghosts, etc. As a teenager this of course annoyed me to no end. The height of my embarrassment came in fifth grade when the class was to read a book called "Witches," written by. When my parents saw the book I brought home they were pretty upset. They of course went straight to my teacher and the principal of the school. Ahhhhh! The kind of attention a quiet, shy almost teenager does not want. Needless to say I ended up reading a completely different book, as the rest of the class finished up with "Witches," and the following year the book was taken out of the school's curriculum. Although I didn't understand it then, I do now (thanks, Ps!). Now that I've got my own kids. Now that I'm trying to raise my own baby girls in a scary world that is full of things no person, let alone a 3 yr. old and 1 yr. old, should have their minds. If you watch a scary commercial or see an inappropriate scene in a show, that will be forever in your mind. You may not constantly think of it but it will always be there. I want to do my best to fill my girls' minds with happy, uplifting, godly things. So now that Halloween is here I am torn between loving the fun of the holiday but hating and fearing the evilness of the holiday. I want it to be a fun holiday where the kiddies dress up as their favorite character and get yummy candy I can steal from. : ) But to my dismay others do not share my hopes for this holiday. I must continue to shield my children from things like this, while out for a walk in our neighborhood:
One house in our neighborhood goes completely crazy at Halloween. These are only part of their decorations. (sorry the sun was fading and I wasn't using a flash so the pictures are blurry).
Just to show the innocence of my baby girl, Bella saw this lovely Chucky doll pulling the wagon of guts and said, "Mommy, can I give him a hug?" (I don't think she noticed the guts) Oh sweet baby girl always be this precious, k!? Needless to say we quickly ended our walk, turned around, and went back home.

I appreciate what you said so much! Growing up we dressed up like Bible characters and went to "harvest parties" at church. We enjoyed that as kids. We lived way out in the country so we didn't go trick or treating and we never had any kids come to our house. Halloween is really a pretty evil holiday, but it seems like just in the last few years the way people celebrate has gotten worse and worse. Maybe I'm just noticing, I don't know. Anyway, this year our neighbors directly across the street set up a grave yard in their front yard with ghosts and stuff. It's just creepy! Anyway, thanks again for sharing your thoughts!
Have a good day!
I know what you mean. It's tough when they are so little. I've always stayed away from the gory decorating and stick to cute pumpkins.
I'm glad you understand our intent with the Witches book. Sometimes you just have to draw a line and say Enough!
